About Max Lent

When I have been in the position to review
resumes and interview potential employees I was amazed at
how little information was supplied by applicants. I
was expected to decide if I wanted to spend the next decade
working with someone on the basis of a single page resume
and a twenty minute interview. Human resource
departments don't want to see long resumes. The logic
behind their desires has more to do with storage space
limitations, not having enough staff resources, and the fact
that they are only looking for criteria that can be
expressed on a page. Is it no surprise that there is
so much employee turnover in corporations.
As an interviewer, I want to know that the
applicant knows. I want to know everything about them
that may be relevant to the position to which they are
applying. I know that in my last position I
successfully performed tasks well outside my job title and
description. For example, my knowledge of scientific
method, learned in fields of biology, parasitology, and zoology turned out to be
very important in solving problems in telecommunications.
My background in marketing and public relations was
extremely valuable to marketing new IT products and services
to business units within a global telecommunications
company. My experience and expertise in retail sales
enabled me to present ideas and concepts internal and
external clients. Managing an infectious disease
research laboratory for more than a decade taught me project
management skills. Being an instructor of academic
classes and workshops helps me present knowledge and ideas
to groups of people. More than a decade of experience
in fine art photography taught me about the aesthetics and
creativity involved in producing art. Having taught
videography and produced a couple of television series
taught me the technology and aesthetics of video production. Researching and writing two books
and many articles across a wide range of subjects taught me
how to communicate using the written word.
An interesting and important fact about my
job history is that I had no qualifications for any of the
jobs I have held. Another interesting fact is that I
excelled and brought great value to every organization that
hired me. My next employer should expect that I will
build on my previous expertise and past experience. I
am an autodidact who can easily adapt to new challenges.
Experience and knowledge is cumulative.
I apply everything I've learned and everything I have
experienced to my work.
