 Cool Web Sites

 © 2008 Max Lent

Introduction

All work and no play makes...well you know the story.  There are lots of fun Web sites.  Some are total time wasters-like imaginary slots or tic tac toe.  Every once in a great while a truly creative wonderful Web site stands out from the rest.  The following Web sites are ones that I believe fall into the truly exceptional category.

If you wish to recommend a cool Web site for this page please send your recommendation to:  Max Lent.

Cool Web Sites

Design

  • Identity One.  A tastefully designed Web site from a Web design firm.

  • Museum of Fine Arts Houston Inverted Utopias.  It's worth it just to log on and turn the pages of the books.  Try it and you will appreciate what I am saying.
  • Nathan.  Web design site that is cool and functional at the same time.

  • Nobody Here.  You will find it challenging to find and explore all of the pages of this site, but it is worth the effort.  Recommended by photographer, John Humble.

  • Plumb Design.  Plumb Design has rethought how a thesaurus should look and how it should work.  Once you have seen this program in action you will never think of a thesaurus in the same way.  If you are writer who loves words, be warned.  This site occupy hours of your time.  And you will enjoy every minute.

  • Praystation.  A wonderfully austere brilliantly designed site with hidden treasures.   Explore.

  • Russian Web site recommended by Danica Eskind.  Visually rich with lots of hard to find treasures.

Fun

  • Apple Computer's QuickTime movie trailers.  This site has the highest quality and greatest variety of current movie trailers on the Web.  To really enjoy it you need a broadband connection and QuickTime Pro, but you should have these anyway.

  • Despair, Inc.  If you have ever gagged after reading the teamwork poster behind your manager's desk, this site is for you.  Despair, Inc. has the answer to those saccharine schmaltzy posters.  They produce cynical posters more in keeping with the corporate ideals expressed in Scott Adam's Dilbert cartoons

  • SodaConstructor. "the online toy where you can build and play with things made out of masses, springs and muscles."

Multimedia

  • BBC Radio.  There is no competition for BBC radio when it comes to reporting the news of the world.  They also have lots of other radio channels with numerous sub-topics that are archived.

  • Reuter's TV News.  What I enjoy most about Reuter's TV is their raw news feeds from breaking news stories from around the world.  This is where news networks obtain their film clips.

  • Soundscape FM.  "...a collaborative sound work which takes place during the Garage Festival in Stralsund, Germany from 23 July to 14 August. It takes the form of an FM radio broadcast, combined with a user-uploadable database filled with field recordings taken from all over the world."

News

  • BBC News.  American radio and television journalism, with a few exceptions, has become the mouthpiece for multinational corporations and rightwing politicians.  It is also provincial.  BBC news is one of the few places where reporters still ask tough questions.  It is the best place on the Web to go to find out what is going on in the world.

  • G4TechTV.com.  Geek TV on the Web.  I enjoy watching their video clips for the latest geek product reviews and news.  They should be broadcasting over the Web all of the time.

Tools

  • Factcheck.org.  "We are a nonpartisan, nonprofit, "consumer advocate" for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics. We monitor the factual accuracy of what is said by major U.S. political players in the form of TV ads, debates, speeches, interviews, and news releases. Our goal is to apply the best practices of both journalism and scholarship, and to increase public knowledge and understanding."  Politicians lie.  Factcheck.org doesn't.

  • JiWire.com. WiFi hotspot locator for the world.  It is not complete, but it is a great resource.

  • Refdesk.  All of the online  reference tools you need in one place.

  • Shockwave.  Some of their animations are crude and contain foul language.  However, this is contemporary creativity unleashed.  I especially like to send their animated greeting cards to friends.  My favorite is the birthday movie trailer.  Note that you will need a digitized photo of the birthday person to use this card.

Humorous emails
