Case Histories
Technical consulting

An international advertising agency had a high-tech client that manufactured a fairly esoteric mainframe
computer add on product. I was called in to work on the account because of my knowledge of the product
and my experience writing advertising and public relations copy for high-tech clients. Another
significant skill that helped me get the assignment was that I could write multiple versions of ad copy
quickly, very quickly. |
A typical day at the advertising agency went something like this. At 8:00 a.m. each morning we
would meet for half an hour to discuss the day's work. Assignments would be handed out to the team. My
assignment was usually to write about a half dozen variations of the required ad copy and submit it for review before
lunch. After lunch I would have an hour to rewrite or revise the copy. At 2:00 p.m. my work would be
reviewed again and then Faxed to the account representative for review. At 4:00 p.m. the final draft would be
Faxed to the client for sign off. By noon the next day the artwork and my copy would be sent to high-tech computer
publications for printing. The next morning we would start again with a new ad or work on additional revisions.
I had never worked so hard or fast before or after working for this company. I am still friends
with the manager that I worked for.
What I learned from this assignment was my ability to create under time pressure. I also learned
that exerting a great deal of pressure on a team over time will cause it to break. My manager quit, I quit, and
other team members were reassigned after the pressure became too much to bear. We did great work and created great
value for the company. I wish it would have lasted. |
